Boxing- On August 4th  34 year old Andre Berto won a decision over Devon Alexander (31) in a tightly contested match. After suffering a knockdown in the third round Berto battled back with unrelentting pressure. As a result Alexander could not keep the pace  and succmbed to the constant pressure.

Was Berto’s performance a result of a strong will to win, superior athletic conditioning or his ability to handle fatigue? Actually a combination of all three. As his trainer for the past six years we are constantly striving to develop these factors.

A couple years back I  used the phrase “comfortable being uncomfortable” in describing my approach to preparing fighters and then World Champion Andre Ward in his rematch with Sergei Kovalev that was aired on a segment of HBO.  Nice to hear it repeated nowadays but most dont truly understand what I meant.

Your training must take a “three” pronged approach if you are to be successful in any sport. Any program must  prepare you for high levels  of Mental Pressure, Fitness and resistance to the ill effects of Fatigue.

The ability to […]

Concord, Ca – Leading up to the Ward V Kovlaev 2 fight much was to be said about Kovalev’s improved conditioning and stamina. HBO’s  24/7 even featured his training at altitude with a russian biathlon coach. Conversely ours explosive. Check it out HERE were at 17:09.

His manager Kathy Duva stated that he was much improved in his endurance. She loosely states the first fight was a sprint and boxing is an endurance sport. Well yes and no. I see boxing as intermitent sprinting. It takes some of both. Liken it to high intensity and low intensity intervals with a one minute rest. To solely rely on the aerobic system (endurance) is a recipe for disaster. It’s your anaerobic system (speed/power) that allows you to burst repeatedly. Boxing is a speed and power sport and developing the anaerobic energy system is paramount.

I’ve read Kovalevs strategy was to quicken or push the pace from the onset. Well if your working faster than you normally do and dont train at that pacing for a significant time (acclimate) period prior to the event regardless of how much aerobic training you have […]

Showtimes “All Access” pre -fight show follows both fighters around chronicling the lives of the fighters as they prepare for their upcoming bout. One team follows camp “Mayweather” and the other camp “Berto”. Well part of Berto’s training is done by Gamespeed owner Aaron Thigpen. The crew has been by our facility at the Challenge Grounds and last week followed us to our outdoor training at Fallon Park. They film all the activity  and interview the athletes and trainers. The last time Gamespeed got some Showtime airplay was the All Access fight prep for Andre Ward  who won the Super Six Championship bout in 2011.

The first episode of the Mayweather  versus Berto fight will air August 28th.
