Anything thrown below your waist your thumbs should be facing out with your pinkies together. You should sink your hips to flight of the ball and cradle it into your hands. The "inbetweener" is a pass thrown waist level. This is a difficult catch because you often don't know whether to catch the ball with your thumbs in or out. You often see players try to catch the ball with their thumbs in and bat the ball to the ground. This is because they are standing tall and the trajectory of their hands is facing down.
Another common mistake when catching the "in-betweener" is jumping up and catching the ball |
with thumbs out. Although you are more successful catching the ball you want to avoid catching this way because your feet leave the ground and you lose your momentum. What you need to do for an "in-betweener" is sink your hips so the flight of the ball is chest level and you catch the ball with your thumbs in.
If a ball is thrown behind you, apply the same techniques with your hand position, but open up your hips so you don't run past the ball. When catching a deep ball (streak, post, etc.) the first thing you need to do is judge whether the ball is under thrown or you need to run underneath it. |
